David Diamante presenterà la Verbania Boxing Night

La Verbania Boxing Night che avrà luogo venerdì 22 aprile al palazzo dello sport di Verbania avrà un presentatore d’eccezione: l’americano David Diamante, che da anni presenta le più importanti riunioni pugilistiche del mondo e che la rete televisiva britannica BBC ha definito The Voice of Boxing (la voce del pugilato). David Diamante ha anche presentato gli eventi della New York Boxing Hall of Fame, della Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame e della Boxing Writers Association of America. Ma il suo lavoro non si limita al settore del pugilato: ha presentato la cerimonia di assegnazione del premio Sportivo dell’anno organizzata dalla rivista americana Sports Illustrated, ha lavorato per sei anni come annunciatore dei Brooklyn Nets (squadra NBA) ed ha interpretato se stesso in vari film tra cui il famoso Southpaw (film sulla boxe con Jake Gyllenhaal e Rachel McAdams). Lo scorso dicembre ha avuto un grave incidente motociclistico che ha richiesto un’operazione chirurgica. Ora sta abbastanza bene da aver ripreso a lavorare come presentatore ufficiale delle manifestazioni Matchroom. Sabato scorso, a Manchester, in Inghilterra, David Diamante ha presentato la grande riunione in cui l’astro nascente della boxe britannica Connor Benn ha demolito in due riprese Chris Van Heerden. Ora David Diamante si appresta a partire per Verbania.

Organizzata da Opi Since 82-Matchroom-Dazn, la manifestazione di venerdì prossimo sarà trasmessa in diretta streaming ed in seguito on demand da DAZN in 200 paesi. Insomma, è un evento di rilevanza internazionale ed un presentatore di fama come David Diamante contribuisce a renderlo di alto livello. Nel clou della riunione di Verbania, l’idolo di casa Ivan Zucco (15-0 con 13 vittorie prima del limite) sfiderà il serbo Marko Nikolic (28-1 con 12 KO) per il vacante titolo internazionale WBC dei pesi supermedi sulla distanza delle 10 riprese. Mr. Diamante, è felice di tornare in Italia per presentare la Verbania Boxing Night?

“Certo che lo sono. Ogni volta che sono venuto in Italia per presentare gli eventi Opi Since 82-Matchroom-DAZN mi sono divertito per la qualità dei pugili, dello spettacolo in generale, per la bellezza di città come Milano, Roma e di impianti come l’Allianz Cloud e il Foro Italico. Quando vado a Milano per la conferenza stampa della Milano Boxing Night che si svolge alla Terrazza Duomo 21 in Piazza Duomo rimango colpito dalla bellezza della piazza, della cattedrale, della galleria e degli altri palazzi. Quel tipo di bellezza colpisce qualunque americano. Ho provato le stesse emozioni al Foro Italico, una costruzione incredibile. Non vedo l’ora di recarmi a Verbania.”

Lei ha presentato la Milano Boxing Night in cui Ivan Zucco è diventato campione d’Italia. Qual è la sua opinione su Ivan?

“Ricordo molto bene l’incontro tra Ivan Zucco e Luca Capuano per il vacante titolo italiano dei pesi supermedi all’Allianz Cloud di Milano. Ivan è un bravissimo pugile, che mette il cuore quando combatte e tanto bene allenato da aumentare il ritmo e il numero dei pugni messi a segno con il passare delle riprese. Contro Luca Capuano ha dato prova di queste sue doti. Capuano ha sempre risposto agli attacchi di Ivan, entrambi hanno dato vita ad un grande spettacolo, ma ad un certo punto Capuano è calato mentre Ivan ha messo il turbo. Alla fine della sesta ripresa, il match è stato fermato. Ivan Zucco può raggiungere grandi traguardi, ne sono convinto.“

Cosa pensa degli altri pugili italiani che ha visto combattere?

“Tutti i pugili italiani che ho visto in azione erano di un livello medio-alto. Alcuni degli incontri più spettacolari che ho visto erano per il titolo italiano. Secondo me, non bisogna seguire gli stereotipi. Si dice che i messicani siano più spettacolari, che abbiano un gran cuore, ma questo è vero anche per pugili di altre nazionalità. La differenza più importante tra i pugili dei vari paesi è nella qualità dei loro sparring partners. Mi spiego: in Italia i pugili si allenano con pugili italiani. In Inghilterra gli inglesi si allenano con i loro connazionali. A New York, Los Angeles ed in molte altre città degli USA in palestra trovi pugili italiani, inglesi, irlandesi, messicani, polacchi, russi, perfino dell’Uzbekistan e quindi un professionista ha più possibilità di allenarsi con altri professionisti che hanno stili diversi dal suo. Questo ha il suo peso quando si sale sul ring.”

Lei ha interpretato se stesso in molti film. A quale film è più legato?

“A Southpaw perché era diretto da Antoine Fuqua, un grande regista. Lavorare con lui è stato fantastico. Quando mi hanno chiamato, ho risposto subito di si. Mi piace il mondo del cinema e sono sempre felice di recitare in un film. Ho lavorato anche in Hardy un film sulla campionessa del mondo dei pesi piuma WBO Heather Hardy. Questo è un grande momento per la boxe femminile. La settimana prossima presenterò il grande incontro tra la campionessa mondiale dei pesi leggeri WBC/WBO/IBF/WBA Katie Taylor e Amanda Serrano al Madison Square Garden di New York. Per la prima volta nella storia del Garden, un match femminile sarà il main event. Sto parlando della sala grande del Madison, quella da 20.000 posti. I biglietti sono stati venduti tutti. Solo pochi anni fa era impensabile vendere 20.000 biglietti per un match femminile"

The show will be promoted by Opi Since 82-Matchroom-DAZN and streamed live and later on-demand by DAZN. David Diamante has worked at boxing events all over the world for over 20 years and his presence adds an international touch at Verbania Boxing Night. Diamante has also played himself in many movies, the most famous being Southpaw starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Rachel McAdams. Last December, Diamante had a seriuos motorcycle accident that needed surgery, but now is back to work. Las Saturday, in Manchester (England, U.K.) he worked at a Matchroom event that saw rising star Connor Benn destroy in two rounds Chris Van Herdeen. Now, he is ready to move to Verbania. Mr. Diamante, are you happy to go back to Italy for the Verbania Boxing Night? “Of course I am. Every time that I worked in Italy I had fun for the quality of the fighters, of the show, for the beauty of cities like Milan and Rome and of arenas like Allianz Cloud and Foro Italico. When I was in Milan for the press conference of the Milan Boxing Night, I was amazed by the beauty of the location in Piazza Duomo, of the cathedral, of the gallery and the other buildings. Same thing in Rome at Foro Italico.” You worked at the show where Ivan Zucco became Italian super middleweight champion. What’s your opinion about him? “I remember well the fight between Ivan Zucco and Luca Capuano at Allianz Cloud for the vacant Italian super middleweight championship. Ivan is an excellent fighter with a lot of heart and very good conditioning. He put up a great and spectacular fight with Capuano, but at some point Capuano slowed down while Zucco’s kept throwing punches and those were hard punches. After six rounds, the fight was stopped. Ivan Zucco has a lot of potential and can go far.” What do you think of the other Italian fighters that you saw in the ring? “They were all good fighters. Some of the most entertaining fights that I saw in Italy were for the Italian championship. I think that we don’t have to judge fighters based on stereotypes like Mexican have a lot of heart and are more aggressive. That’s true also for fighters of other nationalities. The most important difference between fighters is the quality of their sparring partners. That’s what I mean: In Italy, Italian fighters spar with other Italians. In the U.K. British fighters spar with other British. In cities like New York and Los Angeles, the gyms are full of Italian, British, Polish, Latin American and even Uzbekistan fighters.A professional has the opportunity to spar with pros from all over the world with different boxing styles and that has a lot of weight in the ring.” You played the ring announcer in many movies. Which movie is the most important for you? “Southpaw because the director was Antoine Fuqua, a great one. When they called me, I immediately accepted. I like working as an actor. I also worked at Hardy, a movie about former WBO World featherweight champion Heather Hardy. This is a great time for women’s boxing. Next week I will be in New York to work at the great show at Madison Square Garden. The main event is WBC/WBO/IBF/WBA World lightweight champion Katie Taylor against Amanda Serrano. The arena is sold-out. I mean the main arena with 20,000 seats. It’s the first time in history that a women’s fight is the main event at MSG. Only a few years ago was unthinkable to sell out MSG with a women’s main event.”
